Your guide to the deposit return scheme

The UK government update has confirmed the scheme will go live in October 2027. With convenience stores to operate as return points from day one of the scheme across the UK, we’re here to help you get ready to successfully participate in the DRS.

What is a Deposit Return Scheme?

A Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is a recycling program for drink containers. Consumers pay a deposit when purchasing a beverage in a single-use container, which they can reclaim by returning the empty container. The goal of a DRS is to encourage positive behavior changes, reduce littering, and promote recycling by assigning value to single-use containers.

Why introduce a Deposit Return Scheme?

A deposit return scheme encourages behavior change and challenges the throwaway culture, marking a significant step towards a more circular economy. It offers benefits such as improved recycling, litter prevention, and combating climate change.

Currently, over 50 Deposit Return Schemes worldwide are achieving these key objectives.

Where is it being implemented?

The UK Government has announced plans to introduce a deposit return scheme (DRS) starting in October 2027. We will share more information as it becomes available.

Scotland initially aimed to be the first UK nation to implement a DRS, but this was postponed to October 2025 as of June 2023. You can read the Scottish Government's statement here.

The Republic of Ireland's Deposit Return Scheme is now active. More information about the scheme can be found here.
